Bitmap / raster-based graphics use pixel grids whereas vector-based graphics rely on mathematical expressions. Both those methods have their pros and cons when applied to drawing.

Using vector-based brushes allows you to apply transformations to your drawings without altering their quality. The tradeoff of this technology is that vector-based graphics will often look less complex and natural than bitmap / raster-based brushes.

Using bitmap / raster-based brushes will help in getting a closer result to traditional drawings. It is also a good choice if you want the specifics of your own drawing style to be accurately reproduced in the digital realm.

You can apply transformations on bitmap / raster images as well but doing so repeatedly will alter the sharpness of your drawings.

TVPaint Animation 12 brush engine is bitmap / raster-based and implements a new sharpness algorithm to preserve the details of your drawings when applying transformations to them.
